How do you “forge emotional and intellectual connections” between your visitors and the big W — Wilderness? Here is your chance to deepen your understanding of America’s National Wilderness Preservation System and enhance your skills communicating key wilderness messages with your audiences.
This 3-day training will include a 1/2 day field excursion to a designated wilderness area.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the values and benefits of wilderness
- Explain the five qualities of wilderness character
- Identify and review wilderness interpretation, education, and communication issues
- Develop effective wilderness interpretation, education, and/or communication techniques/strategies
- Design and present a wilderness interpretation, education, and/or communication program, product, and/or opportunity
This class is a four-day classroom session, including formal presentations, group discussions, and case studies. Please note: the address of the location where the training will be held will be shared with accepted participants.
Park Rangers - Interpretation, Environmental/Conservation Educators, Wilderness Rangers, Public Affairs Officers, Outdoor Recreation Planners, Chiefs of Interpretation, Visitor Services Specialists/Managers, staff interacting with and interpreting to/educating visitors.
To reduce the length of the course and travel costs, completion of one online training module will be required prior to the on-site session. Completion of this module will take approximately 1-2 hours. Additional instructions will be included in the selection letter.
