Becoming a successful supervisor requires a significant amount of learning and development. It can be challenging to be a new supervisor and begin to develop supervisory competencies. In response to this challenge and as a succession management initiative, the Southeast Region developed the Future Leaders Program to prepare the next generation of National Park Service SER supervisors.
This program empowers individuals with an aptitude for supervision to develop supervisory competencies, prior to becoming supervisors. The objective is to attain a diverse pool of candidates, from multiple disciplines, with an interest in supervision.
The SER Future Leaders Program is ten months of intensive learning and development and applied learning. Participants will attend four, week-long residential opportunities exploring various aspects of supervision and leadership. Skills acquired include:
- Increased self-awareness
- An understand of group dynamics, team building, conflict management, and motivation
- Improved communication skills
- An understanding of the benefits of diversity within teams
- A recognition of the importance of trust in all relationships
This is a blended learning opportunity delivered through residential, online, and WebEx sessions and includes an assigned mentor after graduation. Additional work between residential sessions is required. Participants are also expected to participate in at least one, four-week detail/shadow opportunity.
