What we do

History is, at heart, about asking questions. How do we know what we know about the past? What sources of evidence are available to us and how do we use those sources? Whose voices are heard and whose voices are missing? How and why have interpretations of the past changed over time? How can new perspectives help us see the past more richly and in a way that speaks to us with greater relevance today?

Program Description

While less than 200 NPS employees may have the official job title of ‘historian,’ each day thousands of NPS employees engage in the practices of historical thinking, historical research, and writing. Learning and honing history skills benefits interpreters and educators in creating programs as well as park managers in understanding the evolution of complex policy and management decisions.
