Detail Opportunities in the National Park Service are a great way to develop new skill sets and become exposed to different operational environments. As an NPS career or career-conditional employee, you may transfer, without a break in service of a single workday, to a competitive service position in another organization within NPS without competing in a civil service examination open to the public. You may transfer to a position at the same, higher, or lower grade level.
You can also perform project based work with another organization temporarily without being transferred to a classified position. Ask your supervisor and colleagues about potential detail opportunities that you may qualify for.
What You’ll Find
Virtual Staff Registry
Do you have media skills and available time? Looking for a chance to share that expertise? Then the NPS Digital Community needs you! You have skills other parks and programs can use to create new and exciting content for NPS.gov.
If you would like to make yourself available to parks and programs for web projects (especially if you are on off-season time), add your information to the virtual staff registry. Parks and programs can search the register to match their web needs with employees who have the necessary skills and availability. Remember to get your supervisor’s approval before adding your information to the registry.
