The Value of History – History Relevance Campaign


These are the core values statements of the History Relevance Campaign, a diverse group of history professionals posing questions about what makes the past relevant today. These seven principles of history drive the efforts of the Campaign. The Campaign believes that history – both knowledge of the past and the practice of researching and making sense of what happened in the past – is crucial to the well-being of individuals, communities, and the future of our nation.

The HRC believes history is essential because it:

  • provides a legacy
  • inspires leadership
  • fosters engaged citizens
  • stimulates economic development
  • helps provide vital places to live and work
  • teaches critical thinking skills
