What it is
Director’s Order #28: Cultural Resource Management was signed on June 11, 1998. It supplements the basic guidance provided in Management Policies 2006, and supersedes conflicting information provided in NPS-28: Cultural Resource Management Guidelines.
Why it matters
A primary responsibility of the National Park Service is to identify, protect, and share the cultural resources under its jurisdiction. Management decisions and activities throughout the agency must reflect an awareness of the irreplaceable nature of these resources. Director’s Order #28 requires the protection and management of cultural resources in NPS custody through effective research, planning, and stewardship.
