Foundations of Cultural Resources
An online course that provides a basic knowledge of cultural resources and their significance to the NPS mission. For all NPS employees.

Discovering History
By participating in this online learning, you’ll learn a new way of thinking about and questioning the world around you. You’ll see how history is about engaging in a conversation that has been under way for generations.

Introduction to Cultural Landscapes
This video is an introduction to cultural landscapes of the National Park Service. Originally presented as a webinar, the video is an overview of how cultural landscapes are defined and managed, and is suitable for audiences new to the topic.

Historic Preservation Fundamentals Learning Series
Are you interested in learning more about historic preservation in national parks? In this learning series you’ll learn about the significance, integrity, character, treatments, and documentation involved in working with historic properties.

Archeology for Interpreters
Are you an interpreter, resource manager, educator, law enforcement ranger, or museum technician? Do you interact with the public? Do you investigate, interpret, protect, preserve, or share information with the public about archeology and archaeological resources? Then this learning series is for you!

Interpretation for Archeologists
Interpretation for Archeologists is for archeologists who wish to use interpretive techniques and products to communicate with the public. This learning activity pulls back the curtain on the who, what, and why of interpretation in order to create a foundation for archeologists and interpreters to work together.

This online training explores the values of our NPS culture, and how a failure of leadership and accountability will impact park staff and resources.

Guiding Principles for Field-Based Historic Preservation
A three-day field and classroom based course, led by veteran preservationists, that targets field-based employees who perform hands-on treatment of cultural resources. This workshop will present a working knowledge of historic preservation principles which inform the execution of skilled trades work on cultural resources in the field. Upon completion, participants will have a deeper understanding of how treatment decisions are developed, how resources are evaluated and how compliance, laws and the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Historic Preservation are directly connected to the work performed by trades personnel. These fundamental concepts of historic preservation provide a strong foundation for understanding the Why behind the preservation work performed by field personnel.

Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act
There are a variety of ways to participate in Section 106 training:

Section 106: Classroom Training
Interactive classroom-based training includes one and two-day classes that provide a basic understanding of the law, regulations, templates, forms and access to compliance experts. Some classes are combined with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) training.

Advanced Section 106: Classroom Training
This purposefully small (10 participants) in-person training uses case studies and “workshopping” of real-life projects to help 106 practitioners become more skilled in complex Section 106 compliance. Participants work closely with a 106 expert and other practitioners to dig deeply into and solve complicated Section 106 cases.

Getting Started with Section 106: Online Training
This online learning activity covers the basics of Section 106. After completing this training you will have a basic understanding of what Section 106 is and why it is important, know when Section 106 applies, who participates, when they are involved and where to find references and guidance materials.

Streamlined Activities for Facility Managers: Webinar
This webinar will unveil the mysteries behind the §106 2008 Nationwide Programmatic Agreement and what type of maintenance activities could be streamlined in meeting the park’s compliance requirements.

This new webinar series will explore the National Park Service Section 106 Programmatic Agreement (PA) in detail. These webinars will help you better understand how to use the Section 106 PA when doing project compliance.

Leadership & Management Level

Preservation and Treatment of Park Cultural Resources
A blended learning course targeting Facility and Cultural Resource Managers and others responsible for the preservation, treatment, and maintenance of cultural resources. Includes online forums, expert instructors, and field exercises. Participants gain valuable skills essential to directing and overseeing the preservation, treatment and maintenance of park cultural resources within a supportive environment of collaborative, interdisciplinary teamwork.

Archeological Resource Protection Act (ARPA) for Cultural Resource Professionals
This dynamic, interactive class is taught by highly experienced instructors including an Archeologist and Special Agent. Course content is supplemented with real case studies. You will learn about the nexus between ARPA and related cultural resource (and some natural resource) laws, including NAGPRA, NHPA, and SURPA. ARPA can be applied to incidents like vandalism, arson, museum theft, and failure to comply with §106. The class explores different ways of using ARPA and embracing other disciplines within cultural resource management.

The Masters Series: Conversations with Innovative Leaders
The Masters Series is an opportunity to join a small group of people with similar interests to work with a cultural or natural resources Master to dive deep into current and challenging topics. Our Masters are NPS employees (past and present) who possess a wealth of knowledge, experience, skills, and killer stories! Masters will share their personal philosophies and methodologies and engage in open dialogues with participants.

Coming Soon… Truth or Consequences: Cultural Resource Decision-Making
This is a one-day class designed for park management, including Superintendents and Division Chiefs whose duties include oversight and/or direct supervision of implementation of federal law, policy and guidelines supporting cultural resource protection, preservation, and education.
