The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) is a nonprofit organization committed to providing “leadership and support for its members who preserve and interpret state and local history in order to make the past more meaningful to all Americans.” This organization maintains a website that provides many resources for history professionals and volunteers, including information related to professional development as well as access to white papers and sample planning documents.

StEPs is AASLH’s self-study standards program designed specifically for small- to mid-sized history organizations, including volunteer-run institutions. Through a workbook, online resources, and an online community, organizations enrolled in StEPS assess their policies and practices and benchmark themselves against nationally recognized standards.
