Overview

What is action learning?

From the time we learn to walk and talk, we are action learners – learning before, during and after our actions. In the workplace, action learning is a powerful process and tool for learning while solving real problems and creates opportunities for individuals, teams and organizations to learn, innovate and grow.

In this video, Dr. Melanie Cohen, IT Strategist with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, interviews Dr. Michael Marquardt, President of the World Institute for Action Learning and Professor of Human Resource Development and International Affairs at George Washington University, on the importance and power of action learning.

  • Many NPS training programs such as NPS Fundamentals and GOAL Academy use action learning extensively as a way for students to learn from solving real-world issues they might see in the field. What action learning opportunities have you had in the past? How were they helpful for you in learning about a subject, process or issue?
